SOLD - Oosik earrings
Large, beautifully polished slices of fossil walrus oosik swing from a 14k gold-filled wire with a double dose of brilliant turquoise adding just the right pop of color. What is an oosik you ask? Some male marine mammals such as walrus have an oosik for reproductive purposes ... need I say more? This bone is from an animal that lived hundreds, maybe thousands of years ago and was buried beneath layers of ice and snow and soil which all played a part in its rich and beautiful range of color, until at one point it surfaced and was collected by the Yupik Eskimo people of Saint Lawrence Island, Alaska. These earrings measure 2 1/4" long and 1 3/8" wide and weigh approx. 6.5 grams each (about as much as 3 dimes) Last photo shows the back of the earrings
One of a kind - oosiks vary greatly in size and color. This pair is sold.
