#8 Turquoise & Leather Choker
The perfect blending of a contemporary statement piece with a modern cowgirl vibe, this American classic #8 turquoise choker says it all. The #8 Mine in Nevada produced some of the largest, most distinct and recognizable stones of any mine ever. It's no longer in operation as a turquoise mine but is now used to mine gold. These large and rugged stones display the classic characteristics of vivid blue contrasted against the warm cinnamon brown matrix. This neckpiece is strung on heavy stainless steel beading cable in addition to the knotted waxed nylon visible in the detail photo. This double treatment keeps the piece strong without risk of stretching and the knotting keeps the stones from rubbing against each other and enhances the drape of the necklace. I re-drill each of the stones myself to be sure there are no rough or narrow spots inside them that could prematurely abrade the cord. The knotted leather detail and leather loop closure make for a comfort fit against the back of the neck in addition to lending a personally hand-crafted, primitive feel to the piece. The large creamy golden toggle is a fossil walrus tooth! Though it came from Saint Lawrence Island off the coast of Alaska, I think it feels right at home in this Southwest setting. I love the choker length because it just screams "modern." The close fit keeps the necklace high and distributes the weight of the stones nicely. The length of this necklace is 17 3/4". Because of the size of the stones, it fits more like a close fitting 16" choker. For reference, please look at the photo of the necklace on the mannequin. You can see it fits right at the upper edge of the crew neck Size 4 leather jacket. The mannequin is somewhere between a Size 2 and Size 6 for comparison. These stones have been stabilized but have not been color enhanced or color treated in any way. Stabilizing the stones not only strengthens them but helps them keep the color you see now - without it, turquoise is naturally porous and could absorb body oils and change color over time. I still recommend that you avoid spraying perfume, hairspray and other cosmetic products when wearing the necklace - take care of that first, and after those products have absorbed, then put on your necklace. If you want, you can wipe the stones with a soft dry cloth after wearing. Over time, it will show aging the way a favorite leather jacket might-the way we all do! That's just a natural part of its becoming your own personal artifact-enjoy the journey!
