Rocks In Your Head?
. . .
Many people ask me, "Aren't you that "Rocks In Your Head" lady?" and of course, the answer is "yes."
Then they ask why I changed my name....
When I first started out over 27 years ago, I felt it was important to have that catchy "brand name" that reflected what I made and who I was. "Rocks In Your Head" accomplished both. I love rocks -- I got my degree in "rocks" (Earth Science) and so the name reflected both truth and humor. In fact, for many years, I was a "purist" and if it wasn't a rock, it wasn't in my jewelry. But I came to understand that what I really was drawn to was the raw elegance of nature, whether it was a rock, pearls, bone, coral, etc. To eliminate so many seductive materials because they were not technically rocks ... well, it just inhibited the creative possibilities.
And from a practical standpoint, using my name makes it much easier for people to find me at art shows. Show directories generally use only the artist's name, so "Rocks In Your Head" would never appear on a program. Now people can look for Chris Carlson and find me ... but I don't mind if you ask, "Aren't you that 'Rocks In Your Head' lady?"
